When was the last time you decided to make a change in your life? Maybe it was to eat more veggies or quit your afternoon junk food habit. And then what happens? After a couple of days of success, you find yourself back in your normal pattern and by the end of the week you’ve given up – another failure!
Staying motivated is tough when it comes to behaviour change. Humans are hard-wired to stick to our existing habits whether these fulfill us or not. So, how can you set yourself up for success?
Here are 5 tips you can use – starting today!
1.FIGURE OUT YOUR “WHY”.
When something is really important to you, it is much easier to follow though because there is a really clear reason to do it. But remember that “WHY” has to be yours and not one someone else says is important. It also needs to be connected with what you really value. Are you motivated by fun? How can you connect this change you want to make to your value of fun?
2.LIVE IN THIS MOMENT.
It is a lot easier to stay motivated when you’re paying attention to what is happening right now. If you’re regretting that conversation with your boss or worrying about that meeting tomorrow, motivation often melts away. If you find this happening, stop what you’re doing, stand up, drink a full glass of water, look out the window, take a breath, and pay attention to what is happening inside you at this very moment. Is your heart racing? Are you feeling tired? What is actually going on? Once you stop and are more aware, you’ll be better able to re-energize your motivation.
3.GET ENOUGH SLEEP.
Sleep researchers have shown that when people don’t get enough sleep they fall back into old habits and they aren’t able to sustain their motivation. What seemed so clear when the goal was set is no longer important. So just how much sleep is enough? Most people need 7-9 hours per night, but if you can’t stop yawning or you’re daydreaming and having wandering thoughts, it’s probably time to make sleep a priority!
4.FIND AN ACCOUNTABILITY BUDDY.
Nothing like having someone else keep you on track! Often this can be a real person in your life – your spouse, child or friend. But be thoughtful about your choice; you want to surround yourself with positive energy, so if your buddy drags you down, find someone else. You can even hire someone to be accountable to, like a coach or a trainer. Figure out what will work best for you and make an agreement on how the accountability will work.
5.MOVE YOUR BODY.
Humans are meant to move, but our world is designed to encourage us to sit, sit, sit! When you move, you release healthy hormones which give you energy. 10 minutes can kick-start things, and if you can get outside you’ll also get the benefit of fresh air and sun! Next time you find yourself at the vending machine rather than eating the apple in your bag, try moving your body out the door, then pay attention to what happens to your motivation!
Give these tips a try and you’ll be sure to find yourself sticking with that new habit in a way that will make it part of your new way of being!
